Allister Thompson One of today’s finest artists at the uplifting end of ambient music. Like Hammock at their prettiest and sparsest. Both this and cloudform are guaranteed pleasures for those in need of solace.

Łabandzi Śpiew "To be fair, it is also a very long release: well over an hour of good quality, mysterious and thick-layered music. He admits that this album presents his somewhat darker side and I can definitely see that, the drones here fit the nostalgic autumn time so well", more: labandzi.blogspot.com/2021/10/zarr-sojourn-2021.html Favorite track: Liminal.

about

Running time: 1 hour 12 minutes

‘Sojourn’ is about my experience with inspiration; that it is transient and impalpable, often seeming to dissipate as quickly as it arises. Being transiently filled with the fragile touches of inspiration gives me a fleeting sense of hope that I have purpose and direction. The sonic spectrum of this album moves from light to introspective and culminates in a darker atmosphere. These moods mirror the initial feelings of contentment when inspiration strikes followed by the feelings of deliberation and despondency when it escapes my grip.

Inspiration provides a sojourn into the otherwise impenetrable part of our psyche that we are unable to enter through our own volition; the part responsible for feelings of undeniably fluid thought and creative flow. It is through these sojourns into that part of my arcane anima that I am able to reach an otherwise concealed level of introspective contemplation, from which my creative processes stem.

This will be my second full-length ambient album. I wrote this album over the past two years and many of the tracks have gone through different iterations until I found a point with each that felt right. The music touches on ethereal ambient but perhaps spends more time tending towards darker, more intense drone.

To touch on the writing process for this album requires me to talk about my day to day job as a hospital doctor, something that I rarely discuss publicly, largely because I prefer to keep music and work separate entities in life. Whilst I rely heavily on music as a form of escapism from the inevitable pressures of medicine, over the past year or so it’s been even more of a solace than usual, although I have been plagued with bouts of minimal inspiration and apathy at times, primarily I think through fatigue. Since March 2020, I’ve worked on COVID wards during each wave of rising cases, directly with multiple sick people in far larger numbers than would be considered normal; although that’s not to say that this experience was unique to me as a clinician of course, having taken a toll on many other colleagues. The sound of this album maps the progression of my mood over the past two years during its writing - the first half of the album being more ethereal (written mainly pre-COVID) and the second half being more intense and dark drone (during and now enduring COVID).

For me, listening to drone affords me the opportunity to enter a space of tranquility and focus. I hope the listener is able to find even a shred of that when listening to my latest offering and can get lost in the totality of its sonic soundscape.

I am fortunate enough to be releasing via Stereoscenic Records again. The album has been beautifully mastered by the founder, Andrew J Klimek, to whom I am very thankful.

~ My wish, as always, is to afford the listener a space to drift ~
